9 Ways to Add an Artsy Touch to Your Life

Art doesn't exist in a vacuum and neither do artists represent an alien being. Art belongs to us all and we all have an artistic mind, however, the perception around our artsy self depends largely on how we infuse creativity in our everyday life. We all might go to an art exhibition from time to time but that doesn't make us artsy. Unless you express art through the commonest things in life you don't exactly enhance your life with art. Here are 9 ways how you can add that missing artsy touch to your life in simple ways.

Statement furniture:

Beds and sofas are expensive pieces of furniture that adorn almost every household, however, they aren't the kind of things that impress the eye or satisfy the seeker of creativity. Statement furniture adds a dimension of the artsy in your house. By adding an old Victorian wall clock in a modern drawing-room, or an old Oriental cabinet in your wooden floored library you significantly enhance the look of your house which also becomes an extension of your artsy personality.

Old curios collectibles:

The east is the goldmine for unique remnants of the past, which not only add a sense of history to your home but also tremendously enhances its aesthetic value. War memorabilia, vintage typewriters, old sewing machines, old photo frames, vintage chairs, and rare toys often set the room in the perfect mood. These can sometimes be found at very low prices in antique stores and flea markets, and one such collectible can influence the room significantly.

Up-cycling everyday clothes:

Although more familiar to a bedroom set in modern-day interior designing this can be used in other parts of the house too. The success of this technique depends on the quirk of the design. For instance, even a simple addition of fresh flowers to a basic earthen teapot transforms it into an aesthetically pleasing vintage item. Some readers like to see books around them even more than they want to read them. This often messes up the room and makes it look untidy. Storing them in old steel boxes and metal trunks gives you the sense of the mess that the masochist self wants yet decently avoiding any mess that it can potentially create. Similarly, if you don't find a cloth stand, simply up-cycling a ladder not only creates a functional and durable cloth stand but also gives a different dimension to your room.

Thinking beyond the obvious:

There are many affordable options and mediums that can be used to decorate walls but often when we need to decorate our walls, we only think of paintings. Beautiful metallic flowers, an artistic mirror, an intricate marble hanging, or interesting vintage maps all of these, and more can be perfect for bringing in the artsy touch in you.

Books- got looks:

Beautiful coffee table books are a great way to enhance the acute; cor at home but not too many people think of this. Big books with stunning covers, when stacked together, or placed at angles, look great on coffee tables or even side console tables in the hallway or living room.

Traditional is the key:

Perfect for bringing an ethnic touch into your home, traditional Indian art is exquisite, detailed, and not that expensive. Indian art forms such as Gond, Madhubani, Warli Art, Pichwais, Mughal Miniatures and Tanjores not only adds an artistic touch to your home but also becomes a medium of reflection of your taste and preferences to the world, a window through which they peep into you.

Photo walls:

Create a photo wall by framing some of your favorite photos from weddings, birthdays, travels, etc. Photographs sit on corner tables inside a photo frame and we love displaying personal photographs around the house. Why not add a quirk to them and make the extra statement? Using bold frames of different sizes, and creating an interesting collage to cover a large wall in a stairway, study, or bedroom adds to our sense of aesthetics and artsy element.

Master Artist Prints:

A large painting in the living room always screams for attention. But an original artwork, even by lesser-known artists, could burn a hole in the pocket. Instead, you can invest in limited edition prints of beautiful artworks by master artists, such as Husain, Raza, Vaikuntam, etc. High-quality prints, usually made using the serigraphy technique, have a very similar texture to paintings, and hence, look stunning. So imagine owning an authentic Raza print, signed by the artist himself, for less than 30,000 rupees. Can it get artsier than this?

Paint-it-all:

It is very trendy these days to keep walls empty and show art through them. Adding a splash of colors always helps. Painting an entire wall can be expensive, but adding color to a small part of a wall, or a panel, using an interesting pattern, can look extremely artistic, and most importantly pretty easy on the wallet.

Straight v/s Oblique Pen (Calligraphy Pens)

Calligraphy is the art of writing words in an artistic manner and style. Calligraphy is an ancient art and can be dated back to the Roman times. It is a very easy yet skillful art. It helps you build concentration and also teaches you patience.

For calligraphy, you need to have calligraphy pens. Calligraphy pens are specially designed tools for calligraphy. And the pens are divided into two groups - straight pens and oblique pens. If you're a beginner, it can be difficult to understand which pen is useful. So with this blog, understand what each pen means and which is more beneficial to you.

Straight pens are also called dip pens. They are made up of wood, bone and plastic. An external nib is to be attached to the pen. It has ink soaking channels. Every time you use it, you dip it into the ink pot before drawing.
The oblique pen is named so due to their appearance. The nib is slightly turned towards the left. The oblique nib helps to create correct angles and write effortlessly. It has an ink pad to fill in the ink.

Straight pens are exclusive to some patterns as Amy and beth. They are useful to draw thin lies but it can get difficult to get angles as all patterns are towards 55-degree angle. It also cannot be used to draw a thicker line and can form difficulties while creating right angles due to its structure and the way of holding. It is good for a beginner, but when you start moving up they are not preferred. Oblique pens are made up of wood handles and the nib is attached parallel to the pen at a slant degree. Due to its slant angle of the nib, it makes it easy for you to hold the angle and create the perfect angles and strokes. It also makes it effortless to draw the patterns. It allows you to draw thick and clear words which help make it look neat and clean. It is the best pen used for calligraphy. Even beginners can start with this pen. It is easily available too.

One feature which distinguishes the two pens is the amount of ink flow regulated by both - as with the dip pens the ink flow is quick and the pen dries quickly and with constant dipping in ink can spoil the pattern of letters. Whereas the oblique pen has a slow ink flow and consistent word patterns which looks neat and consistent throughout!

Considering the above points, it is safe to say that oblique pens are the best to choose for calligraphy users.

What Benefits do we get with Mandala paintings?

Images are a great form of visualization, a process that activates the creative centers of our brain; and as we visualize, imagine and go in the creative mode for new things, we completely forget any issues, worries in our lives. Mandala is the Sanskrit word for  Circle or  Wheel. It encompasses the idea of unity, wholeness.

Mandala art is in a circular shape, almost every time, which is one big USP of it as compared to the other art forms of warli painting, Madhubani paintings, glass painting, etc. many people acknowledge Mandala art to have healing benefits to those who draw it. Making mandala paintings can be a wonderful activity for emotionally expressing, meditation, centering our focus, and soothing ourselves.

Mandala paintings help in increasing our mindfulness and relaxation. The circles of the Mandala show that it is not just any ordinary drawing. You get to quiet the swirling thoughts and stress in your life and are lost in the process of just painting the mandalas with the next color, in a way, filling colors in your own life.

The circles of the mandala can represent so many things related to us, they can be our Earth, Sun, the orbits of the planets, our eyes, etc. at so many places we can see the mandala. There is not anything complicated about doing the mandala paintings. The fact that they are circular makes it easy for even young children to draw these amazing paintings with little practice. There come some moments in our lives when we have to take big and brave decisions but don't know what to do next. At such times, it is better to sit to draw a mandala painting, with your favorite music, or just silence. You can light candles or some incense. Choose any design and just start to draw or paint it. You can customize it to any extent.

The amount and kind of calmness that you will get, just can’t be described. Finding the center, journeying from there to the outer periphery with colors, is such a fulfilling experience. The effects can resemble those of Meditation. Doing the mandala paintings regularly will definitely improve your life to a good extent.

Handwriting is the Imprint of the Self on the Page

Handwriting is a mirror of your personality

It is an unconscious habit. We leave our identity in the subtle characters of our writing. The handwriting experts claim that your handwriting definitely has to do something about your personality. How you craft letters and words can indicate more than 5,000 different personality traits, according to the science of graphology, also known as handwriting analysis.

In the early 1900s, Milton Newman Bunker invented the most common graphology technique called graph analysis. (Other methods of graphology predate Bunker's work. His approach relies on the stroke shape of the letters. Graphoanalysts look at variables like the up slants or down slants of letters like l, k, and t, the size of the first letter in relation to the other letters, the entire line of writing slanting up or down, and the shape of ending strokes of letters like and among many other aspects. No two people have the same handwriting it's as unique as our fingerprints.

Your determination, your goals, willpower, persistence, intellect, initiative, ambition, imagination, self-confidence, vanity, repression, aggression, resentment, anger, integrity, and above all sociability can all be determined from the way you write. Whether you write slant or broad or slim.

Deeply forward A person whose handwriting has a very strong slant to the right relates well to others but is quick to react and can lose control. They may also be subject to mood swings. Vertical handwriting is seen in people who control their emotions and rarely show them. For them, rational thought overrules emotions or head over heart, as some might say.

Leftward slant This is a characteristic of the introvert. Someone whose handwriting slants to the left often does not invite closeness or intimacy, is independent and aloof. Large handwriting shows a broad perspective of life, a need for recognition, someone who sees the big picture and has a low boredom level.

Creativity Matters

Being creative and cultivating creativity is crucial for our evolution. When we stifle creativity in favor of what is practical and pragmatic, passions are overlooked, our purpose is lost, and we suffer our potentiality still dormant and unfulfilled.

People define creativity in different ways, exactly like their thought.

Michael Grybko,

-A neuroscience research scientist and the engineer says,  In science, we define  creativity as an idea that is novel, good, and useful -Copying smarter Barone

Daniel Pink

-Giving the world something it didn't know it was missing.

Creativity is no longer seen as just being for artists and musicians (not that view was ever accurate). It's a crucial skill for everybody to master especially the kids.

5 ways to bring creativity into the classroom:

Do not limit the assignments to one format, you can provide them the subject to cover, but give them some freedom in how they complete it. Some students will get more out of creating a video or drawing a comic strip than writing a paper. creativity sessions for kids. You can provide them with some tools to enable their creativity crayons, clay, notebooks, iPads, or even just access to the library or the internet (within reason). They can choose to create, or they can choose to do some digging into a subject of interest to them. Introduce unconventional ideas into class so there is the excitement of doing something new. Have you ever seen a kid getting excited about a textbook assignment? What if assigned TED Talks instead? Or educational (and entertaining) podcasts like Radiolab and StarTalk? Or comics like The Oatmeal or, both of which sometimes touch on educational topics Encourage the students to discuss their ideas. It gets students thinking more critically about the material, become an expert in communicating their ideas and opinions. It also challenges them to listen to other students' opinions and think critically about their contributions and ideas and moreover, it gives them the opportunity to challenge each other intelligently and build off of each other's ideas.

The Magic Of Art Therapy

The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus the Covid-19 has wrecked our lifestyle. The guidelines issued by authorities has changed the way we learn, work & interact with people. Our everyday lifestyle has evolved. It’s the year 2021, almost a year after the outbreak and we are still facing the aftermath of it. While the services are slowly resuming, the one thing that remained constant is the “STRESS”. When things were normal, we used to stress about the commute, project deadlines, cleaning and organization of our homes, etc. and now we are stressed about Internet connection, background noises, etc. Many of us believed that implementation of the Work from Home (WFH) Policy will prove to be a boon & improve the situation thereafter, but instead, the WFH has triggered more stress and mental health has taken a toll. The external factors are out of control, but what lies in our hands is the way we deal with them. Art therapy works magic when dealing with stressful situations. It helps people to communicate and express their thoughts through Painting, Drawing, Music, Poetry, etc. The purpose of Art Therapy is to create a safe outlet to let go of your feelings and fear. The process is not to judge how well you are doing or what you have achieved, it is to make sure that you feel at ease, and have a sense of control over your physical & mental well-being. The benefits of Art Therapy are as follows:

 1. It boosts self-esteem - Often when we feel pressured by something, it results into anxiety because of which we may under perform in the tasks we are good at. Doodling, or painting helps to calm your mind, thereby boosting your confidence to ace the task.

 2. Builds Self-Confidence Art helps to express yourself better, when you create a particular art, it gives you the feeling of accomplishment. The feeling of accomplishment boosts the self-confidence.

 3. Relaxation for Mind & Body – Keeping oneself busy while creating an art helps to neglect the other toxic thoughts for a while. It gives your brain a break from the usual thoughts & combats the negative mood.

 4. It improves focus – It has been evident that training in Arts (Drawing, Dance, Music) boosts your retention power. It enhances your brain function thereby strengthening your attention span.

 5. Increases Empathy – The elements of art such as its vivid and vibrant colors, textures, the main subject of art stimulate our emotional quotient making us more empathetic. The application of Art
Therapy is not restricted to only adults, it is also useful for kids who seem to be nervous when working on school projects, for a child with special needs (Autism), it creates a safe outlet for their emotions and expression to float freely without being judgmental. It calms the chaos and gives them the vision to look at their life from a different perspective. As Stephen Sondheim has rightly quoted, 'Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.

Art , Emotion & Expression

Pablo Picasso quotes Art as, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

Over the years, art has helped me to improve my mood, when I feel anxious, I simply take a pencil and start scribbling, it makes me feel relaxed. It calms the chaos in the life. A personal experience made me believe more in art, it was 9:30 at night, I was scrolling down my Instagram feed, and came across a video from a popular Instagram handle, the video depicted a man from a rural region who was using black ink to create portraits of famous celebrities. He was neither having a color pallet nor did he have the paint brushes, the only thing that kept inspiring him was the support from viewers. He turned a deaf ear to the background noises, his surrounding and kept concentration on his artwork, for that was his outlet for the emotions. I was taken aback on how I keep demanding for a particular tool to make that picture perfect when in reality, the only thing that should really matter is what your art is trying to convey.

Art has power to communicate your emotions, when you are angry, you find yourself scribbling on a paper. when you are happy you see yourself making smiley faces on a paper, when you are sad, you are just randomly drawing lines. If you think that repressing your emotions or denying your feelings helps in combating your negative mood you are wrong, instead it makes you more restless, and insecurities build up. You can’t create an outlet for your emotions until you accept them. When you engage yourself in Art, such as drawing, painting, crafts, you are distracting yourself from negativity that surrounds you. You are in a better place, to be more precise, at peace.

As simple as it sound, even colors have their own language, it’s called the color psychology, when you add Red color, it reflects energy, brings the vibrant side of the picture. When you add Blue, it creates a soothing & calming effect. When you add Yellow, it symbolizes happiness, warmth. Deciding which color to add in your art, expresses your current mood or the emotion that you are going though.

Art guides you to explore yourself better, when indulging in an art, craft activity, question your purpose behind it, e.g.: When you are creating an abstract art, and when you draw a first brush stroke, question yourself on what made you do so, this will help your thoughts to flow freely. Don’t judge your art when you are expressing yourself, you are not creating it to impress someone or you are not doing it to brag a prize at painting competition. Don’t be hard on yourself if you are making a mistake, learn to embrace them, for every time you think of yourself as a person who can’t be an artist, remember, every artist was once an amateur.
